Winter gear for outdoor workers to keep you warm all season long…
because we all know how brutally cold Minnesota Winters can be! Don’t get caught outside with gear that doesn’t keep you warm, here are my top 5 picks.
I talked last time about 10 Things You Should Know About Cold Weather Stress.
Because cold stress and injury is such a huge topic in cold weather states I want to expand
more on the gear; offer up industry safety knowledge that will help keep you the warmest
yet also allow you to do the job needed.
1. Balaclavas & Liners
Did you know 45% of your body heat exits through your head & neck? (Centra) Therefore, you want to trap that heat in with a balaclava or a hardhat liner. For that reason, I have three I’d like to share with you.
First, is the N-Ferno 6823 windproof hinged balaclava. It’s constructed with stretchable thermal fleece, a wind-resistant fabric covering your nose and neck for cold temperature protection and comfort. Furthermore, this balaclava features unique hinged design, 3-panel construction with flatlock stitching and reflective accents so you stay safe and seen! And, better yet, this balaclava is available in five colors.
Second, is the N-Ferno 6827 2-piece fleece/neoprene balaclava. This two-piece polyester fleece with neoprene face mask is attached by hook-and-loops. Constructed with your comfort in mind, one side is made of nylon and the other side is made of neoprene. Designed long enough to cover your neck from the cold temperatures and added reflective accents help keep you safe and seen. Lastly, it’s uniquely designed with a hook-and-loop suspension to attach to your hard hat for better stability and comfort.
Third, is the N-Ferno 6873 3-layer winter liner for your hard hat. This one is made of 3 layers yet it’s is lightweight and doesn’t feel bulky under your hard hat. The outer layer is made of 60% modacrylic / 40% cotton twill blend with inherent flame resistance and self-extinguishing properties for your protection if fire is a concern. A foam insulation mid-layer provides an additional layer of thermal protection for extremely cold environments. Additionally, a 100% polyester fleece inner lining for additional comfort and warmth. Lastly, this style has an extra feature to keep you warm; with warming pack pockets by the ears for added warmth and hard hat suspension attachments.
2. Winter Work Gloves
Besides loosing 45% of your body heat through your head, you will also loose another 20% through your hands and fingers… that’s 60-65% of your body heat. (Centra) YIKES! You don’t want to be like the worker in the picture, be prepared and keep your hands warm with insulated work gloves. There are so many options you have to choose from depending on the work you’re doing. If you work outside you’re going to need to cover your hands; whether you’re in construction work, agriculture, general contracting or an environmentalist. A glove that you can keep on while working is essential winter gear for outdoor workers. Of course we have many to choose from, I have picked out three gloves I’d like to highlight and share with you in more detail.

Last, but to clarify definitely not least, in the top 5 winter gear for outdoor workers is footwear. When your body is cold blood vessels in the extremities, such as the hands and feet, will constrict. This reduces your blood flow to these areas, as a result causing your feet to continue to be cold. I don’t know about you but in my experience, when my feet get cold my whole body is cold and it’s hard to warm back up; especially if you’re outside for an extended period of time. Personally, I think don’t be miserable with frozen feet! To help you avoid cold feet this winter we have two options to share with you here.
First are the Muck Arctic Pro Steel Toe Work Boot a professional extreme conditions 16″ work boots with evaporative cooling fleece liner for year-round comfort. Additionally, these boots feature a 2 mm thermal foam underlay added to the instep area for additional warmth, EVA molded midsole with contoured footbed, stretch-fit topline binding that snugs your leg to keep warmth in and cold out. Lastly, the have a 8 mm neoprene bootie with 4-way stretch nylon that is 100% waterproof, lightweight and flexible to keep you dry and warm. Bob-Tracker molded outsole is rugged, aggressive and durable for your maximum protection and stability. These boots meet ASTM F2413-11 M I/75 C/75 EH.
Second, is the NEOS STABILicers which use 32 replaceable studs per pair of boots, embedded in the sole to help maintain traction in the worst winter conditions and helps lower the risk of slips and falls on and off the job site. A cleat wrench is included with each pair so you can replace the studs as needed. Additionally, they’re comprised of 840-denier woven polyester and provides ice traction while insulated with extendible gaiter for more coverage. Lastly, the outsole features a 2.5-mil polyurethane internal bootie with waterproof membrane and 4 mm PU foam insulation, therefore keeping you both dry and warm.
